The sustainability vision of Basten Leijh

We only have one planet and we have to be careful with it. Early on, Basten Leijh realized that sustainability in a production chain starts at the source: the raw materials you select for making products. In his designs, Basten Leijh always looks at the origin and properties of raw materials (are they recycled, can they be used circularly) and can the raw materials be used to last a long time. The product designs that follow are mostly timeless, so they have long-term aesthetic appeal. Add to this the fact that the products produced are long-lasting in terms of quality and can be reused back in the chain when they reach the “end of lifecycle. Good for the world, good for the producer and good for the end user.

Signify MyCreation and Basten Leijh

The sustainable values of design studio Bleijh and Signify MyCreation, formed the perfect match for the design of the 'Cloak' pendant lamp.

Whereas industrial designer Basten Leijh always looks at the origin and properties of raw materials - requirement: recycled and circularly usable - Signify MyCreation focuses on a sustainable production method with its special 3D printing technique. That lit a light for the two specialists and led to a collaboration with a stage-worthy result.

The sustainable pendant lamp was created by inspiration from nature and fashion: the layering of flower calyxes and fabrics. The challenge for Bleijh was to use hi-tech 3D printing technology to create a natural-looking lamp. The designer turned the lines used in this printing technique into natural layering.

With all the design freedom, Basten succeeded in designing a lamp that can adapt within any interior due to its round shape and different layers, creating a warm atmosphere through a special light effect.
